Patio Care and Maintenance by Season

A simple season-by-season routine for caring for patios, decks, kitchens, fire features and plants in Middle Tennessee.

Spring

Sweep and rinse surfaces, check joints and edges, test lights and appliances and refresh mulch. Check railings, steps and furniture for winter wear.

This is also a good time to clean and seal.

Brush leaves from joints before they break down and feed weeds. A stiff broom and a hose do most of the work.

Summer

Sweep regularly, water plants and containers and keep an eye on drains. Wipe grills and counters and check gas connections as the maker advises.

Trim plants that crowd the patio.

Keep grill drip trays clean and check hoses and connections each year. Follow the maker instructions for gas appliances.

Fall

Clear leaves from the patio and drains. Drain irrigation and water features, cover or store furniture and protect outdoor kitchens.

Check for loose pavers or cracks before freezing weather.

Store cushions and umbrellas in a dry place, and cover grills and kitchens with fitted covers.

Winter

Use plastic or rubber shovels and avoid rock salt on pavers, stone and concrete, since it can damage surfaces. Sand or a pet-safe melt product is gentler.

Keep drains open when snow melts.

Shovel early and gently, and avoid metal blades on pavers and stone. A broom works well for light snow.

Anytime

Take quick photos each season to track changes. A short note about what you see helps spot trends.

Call early about small repairs, since they cost less than large ones.

A phone reminder each season keeps routine care from slipping, and a small kit of tools stays handy.

Our advice in one sentence

A little care each season keeps a patio looking new and prevents most big repairs.
