Natural Stone and Flagstone Patios

Patios of flagstone, limestone, bluestone and other natural stone, laid on a firm base for a timeless look that suits Tennessee homes.

Natural stone brings color, texture and character that no manufactured surface quite matches. Tennessee has a long tradition of limestone and fieldstone in walls and walks, and flagstone, bluestone and travertine patios look at home beside brick, siding and mature trees. Nashville owners choose stone for patios, fire pit areas and walkways when they want a surface with a story.

Your designer helps you choose the stone, thickness and finish, and you review samples in your own light. The crew excavates, builds a compacted base, sets the stone on a mortar bed or a stable stone dust base, cuts pieces to fit and finishes joints with mortar, polymeric sand or stone dust. Edges, steps and transitions are detailed, and drainage is planned so water leaves the surface instead of pooling.

Stone selection

Limestone, sandstone, bluestone and flagstone differ in color, texture and slip resistance, so samples help you pick the one that fits your home.

Dry laid or mortared

A dry laid stone patio is flexible and repairable, while a mortared one is firm and tight. Each suits different sites and styles.

Thickness matters

Thicker stone handles heavier loads and furniture, and thin stone needs a firm mortar bed over a concrete base.

Natural variation

Color and shape change from stone to stone, which gives the patio character, and the layout is planned so the pieces fit well.

Questions

Natural Stone and Flagstone Patios FAQ

Is flagstone slippery?

Natural cleft surfaces usually have good traction, and smooth cut or honed stone can be slick when wet. We recommend finishes for patios and pool areas.

How is flagstone different from pavers?

Flagstone is cut from natural rock in irregular shapes, while pavers are uniform manufactured units. Each makes a different look.

Does stone need sealing?

Some stone benefits from sealer to resist stains and moisture, and others are best left natural. We explain what fits yours.

Will stone get hot in summer?

Dark and dense stones can get warm in full sun, and lighter colors stay cooler.

Can stone be used for a driveway or steps?

Yes, with thicker stone and a deeper base for loads, and steps use stone cut for safe treads.
