Think flow
Guests move from the door to the food, the seating and the yard. Keep paths clear, and avoid placing a bar or grill where it blocks traffic.
Create more than one place to stand and sit.
Walk through a party in your mind. Where do guests arrive, where do they put their drinks and where do they stand?
Seating
Mix dining seats, lounge chairs and perches such as bar stools and seat walls. Guests like choices.
Allow standing room around food and fire.
Add a few stools or a bench along the edge for guests who like to stand and chat. They free up the main seating.
Food and drink
A grill or kitchen near the house keeps the cook connected, and a bar or beverage center keeps drinks away from the cooking area.
Plan counters for serving and storage for supplies.
A small prep counter beside the grill, with storage underneath, keeps the cook organized and the patio tidy.
Lighting and music
Soft, warm lights at several heights make the space inviting, and speakers placed around the edges give gentle, even music.
Dimmers and timers help set the mood.
Lights at table height, low lights along the paths and a few string lights overhead create layers of glow.
Comfort
Shade, fans and heaters keep people comfortable. Restroom access, trash and a spot for coats matter on big days.
Think about parking and neighbors too.
Plan trash and recycling bins out of sight but easy to reach, and a place for guests to put coats and bags.
Design for movement, give guests places to land and keep the cook part of the party.
